چکیده

We define a quantity, the so-called purity fidelity, which measures the rate of dynamical irreversibility due to decoherence, observed e.g in echo experiments, in the presence of an arbitrary small perturbation of the total (system + environment) Hamiltonian. We derive a linear response formula for the purity fidelity in terms of integrated time correlation functions of the perturbation. Our relation predicts, similarly to the case of fidelity decay, faster decay of purity fidelity the slower decay of time correlations is. In particular, we find exponential decay in quantum mixing regime and faster, initially quadratic and later typically gaussian decay in the regime of non-ergodic, e.g. integrable quantum dynamics. We illustrate our approach by an analytical calculation and numerical experiments in the Ising spin 1/2 chain kicked with tilted homogeneous magnetic field where part of the chain is interpreted as a system under observation and part as an environment. Atom phase-locked coherence conversion using optical locking for ultralong photon storage beyond the spin T2 constraint

Using on-demand coherence conversion via optical locking, a dynamic coherent control of the collective atom phase has been demonstrated for longer photon storage beyond the critical constraint of spin phase decay time, where the storage time can be extended up to hours in a rare-earth-doped solid. Coherent transient phenomena such as photon echoes have been investigated for frozen phase decay v...

Control of electron spin decoherence caused by electron–nuclear spin dynamics in a quantum dot

Control of electron spin decoherence in contact with a mesoscopic bath of many interacting nuclear spins in an InAs quantum dot is studied by solving the coupled quantum dynamics. The nuclear spin bath, because of its bifurcated evolution predicated on the electron spin up or down state, measures the which-state information of the electron spin and hence diminishes its coherence. The many-body ...

Measuring irreversible dynamics of a quantum harmonic oscillator

We show that the unitary evolution of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a two-level system can be undone by a suitable manipulation of the two-level system—more specifically, by a quasi-instantaneous phase change. This enables us to isolate the dissipative evolution to which the oscillator may be exposed in addition. With this method we study the decoherence time of a photon mode in cavity QED, ...

Coherent Optical Manipulation of Electron Spins in Semiconductor Nanostructures

Electron spin coherence can arise through a coherent superposition of two spin states in the conduction band of a semiconductor and can persist over remarkably long time and length scales. The robust nature of electron spin coherence makes it an excellent model system for exploring coherent quantum phenomena in semiconductors. This dissertation presents both spectral-and time-domain nonlinear o...
